Best Medicare and Best Medicare Advantage

Tufts Health Plan has been providing health care to Medicare enrollees in Massachusetts for more than 25 years. Tufts Health Plan began as a nonprofit HMO in 1979.  Morton Maddoff, M.D. was the dean of Tufts University School of Medicine, and had a vision of affordable and high quality health care.

Today Tufts offers a variety of plans to fit the needs of all their members. Their tagline is, “No one does more to keep you healthy.” They lead the way in promoting public policy dialogues on issues like prevention and wellness, clarity in expense and quality, and increasing accessibility to healthcare.

Tufts Medicare Preferred HMO was ranked as one of America’s Best Health Plans by the US News & World Report for 2009-2010. The rankings are based the health plans' clinical performance, member satisfaction and NCQA accreditation and compares more than 400 health plans. This ranking simply demonstrates their commitment to exceptional clinical quality, member satisfaction, and overall quality management.

The Tufts network consists of more than 90 hospitals and 25,000 clinicians. The membership was 737,459 as of December 31, 2009.

Tufts offers two types of plans to their Medicare customers. They offer HMO plans with or without drug coverage, and they offer a PDP drug only plan.

There are three HMO with drug plans available. The HMO Basic plan offers the lowest monthly copay. There are two available options with this plan, one has prescription coverage in the gap, the other doesn’t. This plan also offers $20 copayment per doctor visit, $30 for specialists, and has a $3,400 annual medical out of pocket limit.  The HMO Value plan offers modest copayments and also has two options, one with prescription coverage in the gap, the other without it. There are also copayments of $15 for doctor visits and $20 for specialists. This plan also has a $3,400 annual medical out of pocket limit. The HMO Prime plan has the highest monthly copays, as well as two options, with or without overage in the gap. This plan offers the benefits of $10 per doctor visits, $15 per specialists, and only a $3,400 annual medical out of pocket limit.

Tufts also offers consumers their PDP plans, which are prescription drug coverage plans that come in three levels of service, Standard, Enhanced, and Premier plans. These plans offer drug coverage only, and do not cover any medical services. These plans are a great addition to add drug coverage to your Original Medicare coverage, a Medicare supplement plan, and in some cases a Private-Fee-for-Service plan (PFFS).
