Highmark has helped families pay for insurance since the 1930s, after the original company started helping families with their insurance needs. Highmark, as it is today, was founded in 1996  two Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies joined together. The two companies were once known as Pennsylvania Blue Shield and Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania, but are now known as Highmark Blue Shield and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, respectively. This combination is currently one of the biggest health insurance providers in the United States.
